pallet

Pallet coverage varies by supplier and sod farm — confirm before ordering.

    How the math works

    pallets = square feet × (1 + waste) ÷ pallet coverage

Waste on sod is real and worth planning for. Every curved bed edge, tree ring, walkway, and corner means cutting a piece and throwing away the offcut. Ten percent covers a mostly rectangular yard. A yard full of island beds and curves runs closer to fifteen.

    Before the pallets arrive

Sod is perishable. On a pallet in summer it starts to heat and yellow within a day, so everything else has to be ready before delivery: soil graded, amended, raked, and moistened.

Order for a day you can install it. Same-day is ideal, next-morning is acceptable, and a pallet sitting through a hot weekend is money thrown away.

Plan your delivery drop point. A pallet weighs 2,000 to 3,000 pounds and you will be carrying every piece by hand from wherever the truck sets it down.

Water immediately behind installation, not at the end of the day. The first pieces laid should be watered while you are still laying the last ones.

    Where people get it wrong

Comparing prices without comparing pallet size
A $400 pallet covering 450 square feet is more expensive than a $500 pallet covering 600.
    Ordering exactly the measured area
You will come up short. Cuts around curves and obstacles are not reusable.
Skipping soil prep to save a weekend
Sod laid on compacted, unamended ground roots poorly and thins out within a season.
Delivery before the site is ready
Sod on a pallet is on a clock. Prep first, order second.

    Background

Sod is priced by the pallet, and pallet coverage is not standardized. Depending on the farm and the region, a pallet covers anywhere from 400 to 700 square feet. Before you compare two quotes, check what each one actually delivers — the cheaper pallet is sometimes the smaller pallet.

What you need for the job

    • Lawn roller
    • Sod cutter
    • Utility knife
    • Sprinkler
    • Starter fertilizer

    Common questions

How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?

Commonly 450 to 500 square feet, but it ranges from 400 to 700 depending on the farm. Always confirm before ordering.

How much does a pallet of sod weigh?

Typically 2,000 to 3,000 pounds, heavier when it has been watered or cut wet.

How much sod do I need for 1,000 square feet?

About 2.4 pallets at 450 square feet per pallet, including 10% waste. Most people round up and use the extra for repairs.

    Is sod or seed better?

Sod gives you an instant lawn and can be installed in more of the year, but costs several times more per square foot. Seed is far cheaper and offers more grass variety, at the price of a establishment period where the area is fragile and weedy.

How long before I can walk on new sod?

Usually about two weeks, and only lightly. Full use is closer to a month, once the roots have knitted into the soil underneath and it resists a gentle tug.

Measuring by hand is where estimates go wrong

Trace your beds, driveway, or lawn on satellite imagery and the square footage comes straight from the shape you drew. Subtract the house and driveway, map every project on the property at once, and get one combined order list.
